Large crowds of people followed Jesus, so he wanted them to understand what was required of them. He was not interested in mere followers. He wanted disciples. In Luke 14 Jesus says that a certain kind of person “cannot be my disciple.” He uses two short parables to illustrate the depth of commitment required of those who would be his disciples.
