The occasion for this short parable was a confrontation between Jesus and the Jewish leaders that took place on a day filled with controversy during the final week of Jesus’ life. As he entered the temple, the chief priests and elders of the people interrupted Jesus with a challenge to his authority. God has no patience with those who may piously profess to love God, but never follow through.
